Hypnosis Demystified: Answers to the Questions Everyone Asks

When most people think of hypnosis, they picture swinging pocket watches or stage acts with people clucking like chickens. Fun to watch—but that’s not what real hypnotherapy is about. Here’s a quick look at what it really is and how it works.

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural state of deep focus and relaxation—similar to being lost in a good book or movie. In this state, your mind is more open to positive suggestions.

Can anyone be hypnotized?

Most people can, as long as they’re open to it. It’s not about being gullible; in fact, people with strong focus or imagination often respond best.

Do I lose control?

No. You’re always in charge. A hypnotherapist can’t make you do anything you don’t want to do—you can stop at any time.

How is hypnotherapy different?

Hypnosis is the relaxed state itself. Hypnotherapy is when a trained professional uses that state to help with things like stress, sleep, pain, or breaking habits.

Is it safe?

Yes—when done by a certified professional. It’s not a replacement for medical care, but it can be a helpful complement.

Will I remember the session?

Most people do. Some describe it as dreamlike, but you’re usually aware the whole time.
