Canine-assisted psychotherapy is an evidence-informed therapeutic approach that thoughtfully integrates a trained therapy dog into the counseling process. For many clients, the presence of a calm, attentive dog helps reduce anxiety and creates a sense of safety that makes it easier to engage in therapy. This supportive environment often strengthens the therapeutic alliance and allows emotional work to unfold more naturally.
Within sessions, the dog’s role is always intentional and clinically appropriate. At times, this may involve the dog simply resting nearby as a grounding presence. In other moments, gentle interaction may be incorporated to support mindfulness, emotional regulation, or stress reduction. These interventions can be especially helpful for individuals who struggle with trauma, anxiety, or difficulty trusting the therapeutic process.
All canine-assisted psychotherapy is provided by a licensed psychologist and guided by individualized treatment goals, clinical judgment, and established ethical standards. The therapy dog functions as a supportive element within the therapeutic relationship rather than as a treatment in itself, and participation is always voluntary and responsive to the client’s comfort level.
Bailey (“Bobby’s Boy Bailey of Sunningdale”), born in March 2014, has been an integral part of this work since beginning clinical sessions in January 2015. He completed formal training for both obedience and therapy service, and his calm, friendly demeanor makes him well suited for work with children, adolescents, and adults. Bailey’s steady presence and gentle exuberance often help clients feel more at ease, supporting emotional regulation and engagement in the therapeutic process. His training was completed through Bark Busters Atlanta South, with careful attention to the demands of therapeutic environments.
